Immerse yourself in the culture and history of the Dominican Republic, which ranks among the most diverse Caribbean countries in geography, nature, and people. You will stay in beautiful Santo Domingo and end by visiting the Bayahibe coastal region. Your travels will be rich with opportunities to explore historic and cultural landmarks,  breathtaking natural wonders, and Dominican music, art, and cuisine.

Payment Deadline:  The program fee will be billed to your 妖姬直播 State student account. The program fee deadline aligns with the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center's spring due dates. You should refer to the first Spring 2025 due date.

Application Process

You will need to complete a 妖姬直播 State Education Abroad application. These quick steps will help walk you through the process.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

When you click the "Apply Now" button (located towards the top and bottom of this page), you will be brought to the Education Abroad application system where you can view program costs and start an application. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline!

2. Guest Application (If applicable)

Are you a student at another university? To apply for a 妖姬直播 State education abroad program, you will first need to apply for admission to 妖姬直播 State University as a 鈥Guest Student鈥. Please apply as either an 鈥淯ndergraduate Guest Student鈥 or as a 鈥淕raduate Guest Student鈥, depending on your course level.

Once you have applied and been accepted as a 妖姬直播 State University student, you will receive an email with your FlashLine login credentials. Activate your account and then proceed to the next step, which is to apply to the Education Abroad program of your interest. You can return to this page and follow the 鈥淎pply Now鈥 button to start that application.

3. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your study abroad program application, it will be reviewed by the faculty leader. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis. You should hear back from us within one month.

4. Commit to the Program

If you are accepted, you need to log back into your application by going to and clicking LOGIN. Once you see the name of your program, you need to click on it and commit (i.e., accept your offer of admission).

Course Description: In this course, students will explore topics of human-centered design and social entrepreneurship by/while immersing themselves in the culture of the Dominican Republic. Students will build relationships with the local community by working with Hands of Gratitude, a nonprofit organization that provides 3D-printed prosthetic hands to people in need all around the world.  This service-learning trip will empower students to become active global citizens who can impact the world meaningfully through empathy, innovation, and cultural understanding.

Prior to traveling, students will focus on the production of prosthetic hands for distribution in the Dominican Republic. There they will connect with recipients and their families at the Centro de Protesis to understand their unique needs and stories.  This experience, along with visits to industry and cultural sites, will enable students to deepen their understanding not only of Dominican culture, but also social entrepreneurship and global health issues.

Upon return, students will work further with Hands of Gratitude to engage in a challenge-based innovation experience.  Using design innovation strategies, students will work in teams to engage in meaningful problem-solving to/and further develop a sense of social responsibility and commitment to sustainable, positive change.

The Dominican Republic's vibrant, urban metropolis is a jigsaw of contrasts 鈥 international business, art galleries, seaside Caribbean culture, elegant cuisine, and New World fortresses are all rolled into one dynamic nucleus. Locally referred to as 'La Capital,' this city of superlatives boasts both the oldest street and the first church in the Americas. Sample conch gratin茅e, take in the sounds of merengue and bachata, and discover this gem of the Caribbean.

Santo Domingo and Bayahibe, Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, is a vibrant blend of historical charm and modern flair. Founded in 1496, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Wander through the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Colonial Zone, where you'll encounter architectural treasures like the iconic Catedral Primada de Am茅rica and the historic Alc谩zar de Col贸n, once home to the family of Christopher Columbus. Dive into the city's rich cultural scene with visits to museums, art galleries, and lively street markets, then indulge in the tantalizing flavors of Dominican cuisine at local eateries.

Hotel accommodations are included in the cost of the program.

Meals

Breakfast each day is included at the hotel. Some lunches and dinners are provided, and this is specified in the itinerary. Students should budget for meals on travel days and all meals specified as independent.

It is possible to use your federal financial aid to go on 妖姬直播 State University-approved education abroad programs. You can learn more on the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center website.

Health & Safety

Pre-Departure Orientation

Prior to your study abroad experience, you will participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the Office of Global Education. During this orientation, you will be provided with information including but not limited to:

  • international travel procedures;
  • in-country resources;
  • health and safety resources and information;
  • culture shock and resources to help prepare for living abroad.

All students are encouraged to register with the prior to departure.

In addition, we encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel page for for traveling to your destination(s).

If vaccinations or medications are needed according to the CDC, you should make arrangements for appointments with your healthcare provider or the DeWeese Health Center as soon as possible. Appointment openings at the DeWeese Health Center are limited and vaccines may need to be ordered, which takes time. Please note that not all immunizations are available at the DeWeese Health Center.
