Year to Year Expectations of a Student and Advisor Relationship
Over the course of a student's college career, their relationship with their advisor is expected to grow from one of mentorship to one of professional connectivity and mutual respect. Outlined below are the expected steps the relationship should take through each year.

Student Responsibilities
Advisor Responsibilities
Establish a professional relationship with advisor
- Discuss transition to university life with your advisor
- Begin to build rapport you’re your advisor
- Understand the expectations and responsibilities of advising
Review curriculum, graduation requirements, policies, procedures and deadlines as necessary
- Review curricular requirements for your major.
- Become acquainted with university policies and deadlines (e.g. Repeat for Recalculation, My Time to Register, Required Advising, and Formula to Finish).
Effectively use GPS Audit and Plan
Visit 1:
- Discuss GPS with advisor and understand how to use the GPS audit to guide next semester’s course selections and stay on track with your goals and graduation requirements.
Visit 2:
- Discuss GPS plan and use the GPS audit to plan for next semester’s course selection.
Clarifying academic, personal, and career goals and making a plan to achieve those goals
- Establish academic, personal, and career goals with advisor
Utilize resources and support services as needed
- Begin to utilize academic, personal, and career-focused resources.
- Advisor may refer you to Career Exploration and Development, and/or UC 20010 for career/major support.
- Student effectively navigates FlashLine and university website.
- Develop relationship with a faculty/program advisor.
- Seek out-of-class opportunities (e.g. student organizations, student leadership opportunities).
Know FERPA and maintain confidentiality
- Understand FERPA and the importance of securing your confidential information.
Establish a professional relationship with student.
- Introduce academic advising and what to expect during their first year.
Review curriculum, graduation requirements, policies, procedures and deadlines as necessary
- Provide general overview of curricular requirements.
Create and update a GPS plan with the student
- Introduce the Graduation Planning System (GPS) tool.
- Create a plan for the student. Include as many semesters as appropriate for the student and the program.
Assist student in clarifying his/her academic, personal, and career goals and assist student in making a plan to achieve those goals
- Verify student’s major.
- Talk to student about their goals while in college.
Review resources and make referrals as appropriate for the individual student.
- Let students know that there is support available to help them succeed.
Maintain confidentiality.
- Introduce students to FERPA and other privacy related issues.
- Stay current on issues involving FERPA, and other laws relating to confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and succinct advising notes on student contact in KSU Advising.

- Discuss important policies and deadlines applicable to the student (e.g. registration dates, Repeat for Recalculation, important academic standing levels, semester honors).
Create and update a GPS plan with the student
Visit 1:
- Discuss GPS and how students will use it during their time at Ñý¼§Ö±²¥.
- Update the plan and create additional semesters.
Visit 2:
- Update plan, introduce the audit.
- Create additional semesters.
Assist student in clarifying his/her academic, personal, and career goals and assist student in making a plan to achieve those goals
- Verify student’s program.
- Discuss what their goals are during their time at KSU and afterwards.
- Discuss minor/certificate/elective options.
Review resources and make referrals as appropriate for the individual student.
- Review of FlashLine tabs and tools.
- Discuss academic/personal support services.
- If students are struggling with career options, refer to Career Exploration and Development, Pathfinder Major Explorer, and/or US 20010.
- Use KSU Advising referral system as needed.
- Encourage student to develop relationship with faculty/program advisor.
- Introduce out-of-class opportunities (e.g. organizations, leadership).
Maintain confidentiality.
- Educate students as needed on FERPA issues and other privacy laws.
- Stay current on issues involving FERPA, and other laws relating to confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and succinct advising notes on student contact in KSU Advising.

- Prepare to have major and career-focused conversations with your advisor.
- Continue building rapport with your advisor
Review curriculum, graduation requirements, policies, procedures and deadlines as necessary
- Understand and articulate curricular requirements for your major.
- Understand university graduation requirements
- Understand university policies and deadlines (e.g. Repeat for Recalculation, My Time to Register, Required Advising ,and Formula to Finish).
Effectively use GPS audit and plan
- Accurately utilize GPS plan and audit to plan for next semester courses prior to the advising appointment
- Discuss GPS audit and plan with your advisor

Visit 2:
- Update & revise GPS plan, review audit and complete plan with the student.
Assist student in clarifying his/her academic, personal, and career goals and assist student in making a plan to achieve those goals
- Review and reevaluate goals based on interest and accomplishments.
- Discuss opportunities to achieve goals.
- Discuss minor/certificate /elective options.
Review resources and make referrals as appropriate for the individual student.

- Continue major, career and graduation focused conversation with your advisor
- Student is expected to drive the conversation
Review curriculum, graduation requirements, policies, procedures and deadlines as necessary
- Understand the purpose of major electives, and /or general electives
- Understand university policies, procedures and deadlines for ELR, WIC, Graduation Application, etc.)
Effectively use GPS audit and plan
- Accurately utilize GPS plan and audit to plan for next semester courses prior to the advising appointment.
- Discuss GPS audit and plan with your advisor
Clarifying academic, personal, and career goals and making a plan to achieve those goals
- Begin to conceptualize plans for post-graduation.
- Review and reevaluate goals based on your interests and accomplishments
Utilize resources and support services as needed
- Utilize Career Exploration and Development & college resources (e.g. resume writing, internships, and mock interviews) in preparation for life after KSU
- Maintain relationships with a faculty advisor/mentor to discuss future opportunities.
Know FERPA and maintain confidentiality

- You are expected to continue to drive the conversation with your advisor

- Complete your Graduation Application on time
- March 15th for December (Fall semester graduation
- December 15th for May (Spring semester) graduation

- Accurately utilize GPS plan and audit to plan for next semester courses prior to the advising appointment.
