Catherine Meredith awarded a See Chicago Dance Critical Writing Fellowship

Congratulations to assistant professor Catherine Meredith on being awarded a See Chicago Dance Critical Writing Fellowship. The second annual See Chicago Dance Fellowship took place in collaboration with dance scholars and writers in from the United States, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.K. centered around the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, an annual festival held in Durban, South Africa.

Two of Meredith's writings were selected for publication on the See Chicago Dance website. Her article  reflects on the work of renown choreographer Jay Panther and her experience of the virtual festival from the convenience of home. Her article discusses the dance films of choreographers Sylvester Thamsanqa Majela and Sizakele Mdi, which were featured in this year's installment of Georgina Thomson and Vrystaat Kunste Vees' 'South African "Crossings"' series.

"It was an honor to be among cohorts from The University of East London (UK), The Co|laboratory (UAE), The University of The Witwatersrand (South Africa), The University of The Western Cape (South Africa), The University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and The Durban University of Technology (South Africa) for KHULUMA, a writing residency envisioned more than 10 years ago around the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience," said Meredith. "This enriching experience has allowed me to return to writing- a passion I don't make the time for often enough!"

Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State has participated in the program two years in a row. Associate professor Gregory King was awarded a fellowship for the 2020 program.
