妖姬直播 State Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient Encourages Undergraduate Research

For many professors, research was an integral part of their graduate study. Distinguished Teaching Award honoree Mark Kershner, Ph.D., believes it is important for students to begin conducting research during their undergraduate careers.

鈥淯ndergraduate research, particularly educating students as to the whole research process, is really important to me,鈥 Kershner says. 鈥淩esearch is how I got into what I鈥檓 doing now.鈥

The associate professor of biological sciences discovered that giving undergraduate students the opportunity to get hands-on experience helps them determine if the field is right for them.

Each year, the 妖姬直播 State University Alumni Association recognizes 妖姬直播 State鈥檚 outstanding faculty members by awarding three nominated educators with the Distinguished Teaching Award. The Distinguished Teaching Award is the most prestigious award 妖姬直播 State presents to full-time, tenure-track faculty members.

Mentoring Graduate Students

Jacob Boyd, graduate appointee in 妖姬直播 State鈥檚 Department of Biological Sciences, nominated Kershner for the 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award.

鈥淥utside of the classroom, Dr. Kershner is my faculty advisor, and I would also consider him my mentor,鈥 Boyd says.

Starting during his sophomore year, Boyd gained early experience working in the lab.

鈥淥ne thing that I really have enjoyed about working in this lab is that, as I gain more experience, Dr. Kershner has given me more freedom,鈥 he says. 鈥淗e was still always there for me when I needed advice, but he gave me the opportunity to get hands-on experience on my own.鈥

鈥淛acob took an interest in the kinds of things I was doing, and he sought me out,鈥 Kershner says. 鈥淗e came in during my office hours looking for opportunities in the lab. Along the way, my goal was to teach him how to conduct research, from start to finish. Starting with 鈥榳hat鈥檚 your question; what鈥檚 your hypothesis?鈥欌

Kershner fosters many relationships in the lab. Initially, Kershner pairs interested undergraduate students with graduate students.

鈥淚 have fantastic graduate students,鈥 Kershner says. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e also really engaged in this idea of undergraduate research because many of them did it as well.鈥

Supporting Undergraduate Research

If a student shows continued interest, Kershner sets up weekly meetings to go over the scientific process and determine the student鈥檚 area of interest. Together, they identify a research question and develop a hypothesis.

鈥淲e set goals for a project that can be completed over two semesters,鈥 Kershner says. 鈥淭he first semester is usually a lot of planning and teaching them how to write good, testable hypotheses. Then, we try to start the project as soon as possible.鈥

After determining the project, Kershner helps with the logistics of the project.

鈥淲e come up with a project that鈥檚 all theirs,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 work with them on it from start to finish, teaching them the whole research process, and as a function of it, I鈥檝e had 12 or 13 go on to graduate school and three who are currently applying. I鈥檓 really proud of that.鈥

In the 2014 Spring Semester, four of Kershner鈥檚 students presented at the Undergraduate Symposium on Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, and one student won second place.

Hands-on Experience Outdoors

Kershner is a community ecologist, which means he studies different types of organisms and how they relate to their environment.

鈥淲hat it really means is I get to spend time outside, and that keeps me sane,鈥 Kershner says. 鈥淔ield experience is important in helping explain and break down some of the larger concepts I talk about in class. On these trips, students are getting wet, they鈥檙e getting muddy, and it鈥檚 a good way for students to engage in the material more actively but also determine if this is something they ultimately want to do with their lives.鈥

Students and faculty have found these field trips to be rewarding experiences.

鈥淚鈥檝e had multiple students and other faculty tell me that those field trips are some of the best days they鈥檝e had in school because they鈥檙e fun, and they鈥檙e seeing some application of the things we鈥檙e talking about in class,鈥 Kershner says.

Kershner鈥檚 commitment to students, both in and outside the classroom, has benefited many beyond their undergraduate careers, and he says he is grateful to be recognized.

鈥淚t means students appreciate my efforts in the classroom,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 could get up there and talk, but if I鈥檓 not reaching the students, I don鈥檛 really think I鈥檓 doing my job. The fact that students thought enough to nominate me is a big deal. It鈥檚 a recognition, also, that the effort I put in to this is recognized by the university on some level, as well.鈥

The 妖姬直播 State University Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Teaching Award. If you know a professor who makes a positive impact, nominate him or her to receive this award.

Sponsored by the alumni association since 1967, the Distinguished Teaching Award is the university鈥檚 most prestigious honor for full-time, tenure-track faculty members. The award is presented annually to three professors who demonstrate extraordinary teaching in the classroom and a devotion to impacting the lives of students.
