Teamwork and Innovation Drive CCI Team to Second Place in National Advertising Competition

Effie Collegiate Challenges College Students to Create Marketing Campaign for Subaru

An interdisciplinary team of 妖姬直播 State students took second place nationwide for their efforts in creating a marketing campaign to reinvent the car buying process for Millennials and Gen Z.

The competition, Effie Collegiate, is modeled after the professional competition of the same name, calling on the next generation鈥檚 advertising, marketing, design and communication students to work on real world business challenges. Subaru served as the client, sponsoring this year鈥檚 challenge, and hundreds of teams responded.

The second-place team was made up of four students in the College of Communication and Information (CCI): Ashley Heilman, 鈥19 (advertising), Noah Lewchenko, 鈥19 (advertising), Abby Peters, 鈥19 (advertising) and Kelsey Velemirovich, 鈥20 (visual communication design). Judges called their entry an 鈥渋ndustry changer鈥 and an idea that taps 鈥渋nto the already established behaviors of the target audience.鈥

As national finalists, they had the chance to present at Subaru鈥檚 Camden, New Jersey, headquarters. They were also given a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities.

鈥淲e had one week to make this huge presentation that we would be giving to the Subaru team along with their advertising agency, Carmichael Lynch,鈥 said Heilman. 鈥淣oah and I were able to fly out to present, and Abby and Kelsey worked from their locations to help us in building the presentation.

鈥溾 Even though we only got second place, Effie and Subaru still provided us with some awards. 鈥 We got a small Effie Award, which is what people win when they win actual Effies in the industry. It鈥檚 really amazing to say that I now have an Effie!鈥

A second team of students earned the distinction of being one of six semifinalists in the same competition; team members included: Gracie Durham, 鈥19 (communication studies), Rachel Rich, 鈥20 (visual communication design) and Katie Studnicha, 鈥19 (visual communication design).

Both teams worked on competition entries as part of Advertising Practicum, a course taught by Associate Lecturer Wendy Wardell.

鈥淭here aren鈥檛 words to express how proud I am of all the students in the practicum class,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey voluntarily enroll in a class that has the same rigor they鈥檒l see professionally. There is no other collegiate competition like Effie Collegiate 鈥 it demands all the things that are demanded by professionals down to the attention to detail of editing their entry for specific word counts. Every student in the class puts in so much time and effort.鈥

Velemirovich called the class and competition a 鈥渙ne-of-a-kind experience鈥 that, as a VCD major, got her out of her 鈥渄esign bubble.鈥

鈥淲hile I am usually only part of the design-related tasks, I found through this project that I also really enjoyed conducting research and compiling data from primary and secondary sources,鈥 Velemirovich said. 鈥淭his practicum course/competition was unlike any other class I have taken before, and Subaru was such a fun client to work with.鈥

She is completing a design internship this summer and said she has already been able to apply skills she developed by working on the project.

In addition to reinforcing future career goals, students learned important lessons in collaboration by working in multidisciplinary teams representing three of CCI鈥檚 schools: Journalism and Mass Communication, Communication Studies and Visual Communication Design.

鈥淭he teams really gelled and each team member brought specific skills to the group effort,鈥 Wardell said. 鈥淏oth teams did quantitative and qualitative research, and both teams discovered a really strong insight that drove their entry.鈥

Durham, a communication studies student, stressed the value of teamwork when solving a complex business challenge.

鈥淭he three of us each had different strengths, in different disciplines, and we were able to show off what we were capable of doing with those particular strengths,鈥 said Durham. 鈥溾 We would bounce off of each other鈥檚 ideas, and sometimes we would find we were knowledgeable in areas we thought we lacked. Working in a team strengthened our communication skills the most because you have to be able to stand up for yourself, take the lead, ask questions or point out concerns even when it makes you uncomfortable.鈥
